Elements of Personal Effectiveness Series: #2 Take Risks

Updated: Nov 6, 2024

Efficiency is doing things right; effectiveness is doing the right things.”

Take Risks

Break through limitations

Risk-taking means deliberately pushing beyond established borders to achieve extraordinary results. These borders can be both real and perceived. In both cases it requires to challenge comfort zones, question existing limitations, and envision possibilities beyond the status quo. Strategic risk-taking is not about reckless action, it reflects calculated moves that shall lead to innovations and significant competitive advantages.

When organizations cultivate a culture supporting risk-taking, it is an environment where growth and innovation are targeted. Reframing failure as a learning opportunity and providing the psychological safety necessary for the team to propose and pursue bold ideas. Breaking through self-imposed limitations or industry-standards enables organizations to discover new markets, develop innovative products, or revolutionize existing processes.

The capacity to take risks also builds resilience and adaptability within the organization. Teams become more comfortable with uncertainty and change. They develop a greater ability to navigate challenges and find opportunities. It is a mindset shift from limitation-focused to possibility-focused thinking. The result is more agile and responsive business strategies.

Leaders inspire their teams to think bigger and aim higher. By demonstrating that controlled experiments and bold moves are valued, the entrepreneurial spirit throughout the organization gets a big impulse. A cumulative effect is created by breaking through limitations, regardless if real or perceived, positioning the company for sustainable growth and leadership in the industry.
