“Efficiency is doing things right; effectiveness is doing the right things.”
(Peter Drucker)
Be Honest
Tell the truth, to yourself first, then to others
Beyond being the foundation of society, honesty is the cornerstone of effective leadership and sustainable success. It begins with self-reflection and the courage to acknowledge reality, even if uncomfortable or challenging. Who practices honesty with him or her selves gains clarity about their strengths, limitations, and the real state of their organization.
Internal honesty is basic for authentic communication with others. When leaders tell the truth to their teams, stakeholders, and customers, trust and credibility are built and become invaluable assets for the organization. Honest communication, especially in difficult situations, prevents the accumulation of hidden problems and enables proactive problem-solving.
Creating a culture of honesty requires consistent modeling from leadership. To demonstrate that truth-telling is valued over face-saving or short-term gains, leaders have to encourage transparency throughout their organization. Trust will enable faster decision-making, more accurate reporting, and stronger interpersonal relationships, particularly if those are not frequently face-to-face due to international collaboration of regular WFH.
Honesty also provides a competitive advantage. As lots of information flow freely, organizations known for their integrity and trust attract better talent, earn higher customer loyalty, and build more resilient partnerships. The practice of being honest, telling the truth, starting with oneself and extending to all stakeholders, becomes a powerful driver of long-term business success.
